When a student becomes nervous, anxious, sad, or angry in the classroom, they are expected to calm themselves down and return to a place of learning. This task, which seems simple to adults, can actually be very difficult for children! Self-regulation, the ability to calm one's emotions, is something that must be learned. At our elementary school, we teach self-regulation skills daily in our morning meetings, through my monthly guidance lessons, and through visuals posted throughout the halls. Techniques we teach include deep breathing, body movement, identifying emotions through zones of regulation, and more. When a student reaches a place of heightened emotion, they often need a break and a place to cool down. We encourage our teachers to offer "calming corners" in their classrooms as a safe space for students to cool down and regroup. However, these corners require additional resources and items that our teachers do not always have access to! This project will allow me, as the school counselor, to prepare a calming corner starter pack to each classroom. Teachers will have two buckets, one filled with calming tools and the other to put used toys in for cleaning. The items in each calming corner bucket will allow students to have a physical manipulative to help them regain control of their emotions and return their mind to a state that is ready to learn!
