My students strive to build community within our classroom and community. They desire to better understand one another's experiences and cultures. Creating allies and groups of support is key to their academic and personal success in fifth grade and beyond. One key way that we build that community of allies is through shared reading that helps us to build our personal identity and to grow in understanding of others' identities. The books in this project represent both my student's experiences and cultures along with being written by authors who also share their experiences and cultures. Representation is key to our engagement and growth as students and as young people within our greater community. We love reading books together in book clubs, and these books will provide us opportunities to share our reading lives and to share in our conversations about personal identity and experiences. This helps us to become stronger thinkers and life-long readers, but most importantly it grows our ability to empathize with others, to listen to others' stories, and to be allies to one another.
