With the challenges of distance learning during COVID-19, I would love to welcome each of my students to 10th Grade English with a personal collection of the 5 books we will read in the course. I have been teaching English for 18 years and I have seen the attention span and desire for reading slowly decrease over my tenure. I have listened to my students when they say they used to like reading, but their lives got too busy to read for pleasure, and too busy to even finish their academic reading. Many students stop all together, or resort to SparkNotes and never actually read books. I am big proponent of teaching with novels and for students to actually own their own books forever (rather than borrowing from the school), which will be a first for some of my students, and make a lasting impact on all my students. $56.37 buys the set of 5 books for 1 student. Novels build literary endurance and a closer connection between students and their learning - especially when they will own the book. This is an investment in their literacy and the literacy of their families. The titles I have selected are thought provoking and will allow students to make connections to current events and the human condition.
