Often my students struggle with speaking, reading and writing in our target language, English. However, all of the students love to express themselves through drawing. With COVID-19 safety guidelines, I can no longer share a classroom set of brush markers for their projects. Each student will now need to have their own supplies. This is an expense our families are not able to provide for their children. Preparing multilingual students for success means supporting their ability to express themselves. Just as none of our social studies issues today are black and white, none of their assignments need to be either. Adding colorful illustrations, whether they be as simple as representing a vocabulary word or as intricate as mapping geo-political regions, adds depth and complexity through expression.
