I was so moved by the story of Lopez Lomong that I felt every student I teach can learn something from his amazing experience. Even if we can't read the book together in our classroom, the book and its messages are powerful enough to transcend distance. Through the powerful journey of Lopez Lomong, my students will learn what it takes to be persistent, dedicated, hard working, and humble while knowing that where they came from has truly shaped who they are. This book lends itself to incorporating a number of informational texts about the plight of Lost Boys, the issues with access to clean water, and the giving spirit of many American families who have reached out and changed the lives of countless families worlds away. By pairing these texts with this true story, I am laying the foundation of change for my students. Hopefully, my students will see what action steps they can take to make their life successful as well as better the lives of those around them.
