Our 9th grade classes take part in daily independent reading which allows them to choose their own texts. They read these books during each class for 10 minutes, and they are encouraged to take books home with them, too. We hope to foster their love of reading through allowing them to explore genres and authors of their own interests. My classroom library is not too expansive, and in adding selections, I intend to broaden the options of novels, especially young adult, that feature diverse characters and cultures. Through adding 30 diverse books to my class library, I hope to expand my class library to a location that is exciting to browse, and that makes each student feel comfortable and included. It's important that all student can see themselves reflected in the books they read, and learn about other experiences, as well.
