In science class, students explore, investigate, experiment and observe what happens in our world's systems and cycles, as well as the impacts that we humans have on those systems and cycles. Science is about doing, not about "sit and get" reading and worksheet assignments. It is also about the sharing of ideas, discussion of observations, and working out possible solutions. However, with the current situation in our nation, and world, our students are not allowed to work closely together or to share supplies and materials. Even if they perform investigations independently, they will lose out on the very important collaboration and discussion parts of learning with science. With these protective dividers, we can overcome this obstacle and again collaborate, share, and make new discoveries about our world. By providing these protective shields, my students will be able to continue "doing, sharing, comparing, discussing and redoing" collaboratively as they learn and discover the wonders of our world. Each student will be working with their own materials but will be able to discuss and share their observations with their table partner while still being safely separated. Without these shields, students will be distanced or masked in ways that will inhibit true collaboration and sharing.
