I am building a science lab to ignite the imagination of my students. My small school is growing and in the future we will have a fabulous science lab, but for now, I am slowly turning my classroom into a lab suitable for a class filled with science-loving kids. My students have learning disabilities including autism and hyperactivity, so big, bright visuals and activities involving movement help them make connections to complex, abstract ideas like Astronomy, Chemistry, and Plate Tectonics. Creating a periodic table on the board or assembling compounds allows my students to see and touch abstract concepts. Every year I add more science supplies, so that we can expand our exploration. Science is much easier to learn through hands-on activities like growing crystals and cracking geodes. It is my goal to make science fun and inspire my students to explore the world around them. Most importantly, I want to build curiosity. I requested supplies to keep us safe during these Covid times. Some equipment like rulers may go home with my students to practice taking measurements and using the metric system. (We are unsure if we are distant learning yet, but I am making several plans). Through distance learning I can perform experiments for my students, but I can't wait to be back in our classroom, where my students can be the mad scientists.
