Our district has chosen to return to face-to-face learning this fall. Due to COVID-19, we are being asked to use social distancing within our classrooms. This means, we need to have enough materials for each student to have their own. These materials will help make that happen! My kindergarten team members are strong believers in the fact that children learn through play. And we provide them with the opportunity every chance we get. Each morning as students enter our classrooms, they take part in something we call Soft Landing Time. Mornings are busy in our classrooms, so these hands-on materials provide them the opportunity to explore and learn on their own while we settle in for our day. The students are always excited to get to their spots and see what they have to explore. This is a great way for us as teachers to get in Language Arts and Math activities. As well as science and social studies at times. The kids don't even realize that they are learning most of the time. The activities are meant to be open ended, so that's students can work with them at their learning level. During a typical school year, these materials are shared within a group, which encourages sharing, taking turns and problem solving, however this year will be different. Each child will need their own small container of materials in order to take part in Soft Landing Time.
