Currently Universal Academy is in the process of creating an art class for all of our students from Pre-K to 8th Grade. A majority of these students have never had an art class and I want to be able to give them time and a space to allow them to be creative. The goal for these art classes are to bring history and current events into the students' work. I want them to have full creative freedom but I also want to go over some the world's history and events and how it makes them feel. Specifically, with the current events of the BLM movement and the mistreatment of people of color. Our students are predominately people of color and I want them to be able to learn how to express their feelings about that from a young age. Another goal for the art class is to teach them about other art forms from other countries, for example Pattachitra Scroll Paintings that come from India and are like comic strips, or the history and art behind Dia de los Muertos and explaining why its so important in Mexico, etc. Understanding other cultures and communities is where the education system needs more emphasis on and I want to be able to provide that for my students.
