As my school prepares to return to in-person teaching 5 days/week in September, my co-teacher and I are making plans to take our class outdoors often for academics, snack time, and lunch. We can then teach and learn in a safer way and hopefully reduce the spread of the virus-- with the benefits of being together, appreciating nature, and having fun. Please help us move our classroom outdoors-- to nearby grass, local parks, and even the street in front of our school, which will be closed for the year to allow for more outdoor learning space. Portable chairs are lightweight, comfortable, preferable to sitting on pavement, and help little ones define the space they need to stay in to be 6 feet apart. When we sit apart outdoors, our 6 and 7 year old students will be able to take breaks from wearing masks. We will all be safer when it is time to take masks off to eat and drink. Movement, fresh air, and flexible seating are all particularly important this year in our cotaught first grade class. My co-teacher and I value academic and social-emotional learning, outdoor experiences, movement, the arts-- and keeping everyone safe and healthy!
