When a child is too young to read independently, they need to rely on the initiative of others to expose them to interesting topics and information in the world around them. They need to be introduced to non-fiction topics that expand their view of the world they live in. A weekly newspaper, full of engaging pictures on relevant, child-friendly subjects is just what they need to spark peer conversation, encourage debate, and inspire further investigation. In the classroom, the students will be able to use their individual copies to follow along as we discuss a variety of topics, as a class, using online videos, activities and other resources. They can take their copies (along with their enthusiasm) home to share with their families, strengthening their own learning and including those at home in even more discussion, joining home and school in valuable ways. I am eager for them to have a file at home in which to store their collection of newspapers, for future reference.
