Access to quality and high interest books are imperative to student success. Each student deserves a library program that contains books to help them to reach their maximum potential. As a new librarian, I was shocked to see that we have very few books for our ELL students despite the fact that our number of students with English as a second language continues to increase each year. One of our library and school goals is to create an environment based around inclusion for each student that we serve. Developing a reading program where ELL students have access to materials that support curriculum objectives and personal interests will greatly improve the quality of our reading program as well as allow us to better serve some of our students that are in the most need. These sets of fiction and nonfiction books will be directly used for students to complete required class reading assignments, as participation in school wide reading incentive programs, completion of summer reading assignments, as well as for personal reading. Access to up to date non-fiction books and popular fiction books will not only help students academically but can also help with acquisition of new language skills as well as promoting confidence.
