With the circumstances that have impacted our country and our world this past year, it is more important than ever that I am able to share diverse books with my students. These books will help to give greater representation to minorities as well as bring perspective and awareness to my students. I currently teach in a large suburban school district in southeastern Pennsylvania, and it is always beneficial to expand our horizons and learn about our unique, and ever-changing society. This involves reading about characters that come from all different geographical locations, races, ethnicities, and cultures, as well as reading more non-fiction books to learn about our history, geography, and important figures from reliable sources. This project is also a result of receiving the news from my district that we will beginning our 2020-2021 school year completely online. This announcement has brought a mix of feelings and emotions for teachers, parents, and students. Above all though, I feel strongly about wanting to make this year the best year ever regardless of our circumstances. My students deserve that. By having access to all of these books, I can better ensure that my students will receive quality reading and writing instruction that is interactive and engaging. I plan to use these books for quality read-aloud time and mini-lessons to teach all of our important 4th-grade skills and strategies. We may not get to gather on the rug together for these lessons, but having these books right at my fingertips will help me to recreate this time with my students, even if through a computer screen from the safety of our homes!
