Having tennis equipment (racquets, nets, and balls) will provide students an engaging new outlet where they can experience game play and physical fitness all in one. With the tennis equipment students will primarily learn forearm and backhand strokes and modified game play. Having a class set of tennis racquets will allow all students to participate at the same time, increasing students practice time. Nets will allow students to understand the importance of using appropriate force and proper striking form in order to play a successful game of tennis. Having the ability to set up four nets will allow for the whole class to practice rallying in pairs at the same time. Multiple nets are also conducive to stations where students can rotate through different tennis activities. The 25% reduced speed Green Dot tennis balls will allow students to experience more success early on in the unit. Students will be exposed to an exciting high intensity, high cardio, independent yet social life-long sport. Teaching tennis will also provide a motivating context for students to want to learn and master striking from a side orientation. This skill is on the 5th grade report card. Through the tennis skills students will learn and improve on their hand eye coordination. This is transferable to many other sports and PE activities. Students are always more excited to be active and physical when they are exposed to something new. Another added benefit of this project is that students will gain the skills to be able to take advantage of their neighborhood tennis courts. I can't wait to discover the next Serena Williams or Roger Federer in my class.
