With the start of the school year coming quickly and still so many unknowns we, as educators, must find the fine line between supporting students' needs as well as keeping their safety in the forefront of every decision. Students in special education programs face a unique set of challenges in these uncertain times. These circumstances have teachers delivering instruction either online or in small cohorts with teachers traveling, rather than students. As a special education teacher, this will likely mean several students with many needs in the same classroom, all day. The items on my wishlist will allow my students to have flexible seating, options for breaks, and a separate area if they just need a quick getaway. All of these things are essential in ensuring they have a flexible environment that they are comfortable enough to learn in. For any student, but particularly students with special needs, outside factors must be addressed before real learning can take place. Typically, my job would entail supporting special education students in their math classrooms, grades 6-8. Given that students in my program struggle to understand grade-level material, as it is presented, I have to find unique ways to modify and make standards accessible to them regardless of the mode of instruction. Materials such as manipulatives and number lines will help me to instruct whether that is in the classroom or during a recorded lesson, posted online. Many things on my wish-list will be most beneficial with the wishful thinking of students being in the same classroom as I am this fall. These donations will help me to serve students via online or in-person learning with an emphasis on making the 'new normal' of education the most productive environment possible. My students require flexibility in seating, attitude, and delivery of instruction.
