Hey There! My upcoming 5th grade students are going to start their last elementary school year very differently than any before. They are starting school after a very long break, almost a full 5 months away from the classroom. Whether we are allowed back in the classroom right away or not, the social emotional component is going to be of vital importance with these kids. To help my students acclimate and feel comfortable jumping back into learning I want to teach them the most, without them feeling like they are being bombarded with academics. My favorite book to read with my students is The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. (also the sequel The Wild Robot Escapes) The book is about a robot that has to figure out a way to survive in a new environment on an island and make friends with the animals. She learns to adapt her way of thinking and embrace everything and everyone around her. Not only is this great for students to see how the robot can make friends with different animals/species/people but also how she adjusts to her new life. On top of that there is so much science, technology and nature involved in the story it touches on many science components we learn throughout the school year. In my classroom, reading and books play an important role, I want my students to leave my classroom loving to read! I have found that in my short time teaching students love reading and using their imagination to visualize and relate to the books they read. I don't think that we should have to stop because we may not be able to be physically in the classroom, more than ever kids need books!
