I am so excited to begin using a new language arts and writing curriculum that is centered around several incredible and engaging novels. This year I hope to implement the Open Up ELA program in my class. After two years of struggling to engage students with the basal readers provided by my school district, I am so excited that I have found a program that uses novels as anchor texts. I read aloud Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief to my class a couple of years ago and they were enthralled. I remember wishing that I could get my students to be that focused on the stories we analyzed in during language arts time. The truth is, that those stories were usually boring and irrelevant to the lives of my students. Now I have discovered a program that utilizes stories that I know will keep my students' interest and that contain important themes of social equality. I truly have high hopes for the year ahead.
