With the explosion of civil disobedience and civil discourse about the systemic injustices in our criminal legal system in the wake of the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Armery and many others, my students will return to online learning this fall burning with questions, thoughts, and emotions about what they are seeing, hearing, and experiencing in their communities. As an English teacher, I have an opportunity to engage them in rich discourse about these issues using readings designed to peak their interest. A unit on the connection between our legacy of systemic racism and the conscious and unconscious biases that perpetuate police abuses in Black and Brown communities will culminate in a reading, discussion and analysis of The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas. Students will be asked to make connections between the experiences of people in their lives and Starr's encounters with bias and police violence in the book. They will also be asked to consider and challenge their own personal biases and write and discuss what role they can play in combating systemic racism.
