One of the most heartbreaking messages I received from multiple students during the spring school shut down was that they didn't have have the money to buy colored pencils, or paper or glue. Many of my students have never used higher quality art materials and I try so hard to teach them as if there were professional artists. They love being able to pick out their own materials and experiment with them in class. Once the schools were closed I realized that my classroom is the only place that my students could create without worry. They were immediately stunted by the lack of very basic supplies. I was able to alter their assignments to keep them working and being creative by allowing them to use things that were out of the ordinary. but they need to learn basic sills first in the fall to be able to explore more creative approaches.
