My district will have students attend 3-4 day socially distanced orientations at school to start the year. My goal during this time is to build relationships with my students and give them the tools to successfully engage in the virtual math classes that will begin after orientation. I will be giving every student a bag with necessary supplies for virtual math: paper, writing utensils, white board (made from sheet protectors), etc. Additionally, I will give stress balls (as a tool to help focus during long hours of video calls) and headphones to students who need them. The headphones, in particular, will really help, as many of my students have siblings who are simultaneously participating in virtual classes, and the background noise can make it difficult for everyone to fully focus and engage with their individual classes. I have also requested a few tools to set myself up for success as a teacher, based on my experience thus far with distance learning. For example, it will be really helpful to have a large whiteboard for me to teach from at home and a small tripod to record videos of my lessons. Finally, one of the most important aspects of my job is to build community, and I have a few ideas for how to continue doing that when we aren't all together in one classroom. For instance, I have requested supplies to drop off Mathematician of the Week care packages to celebrate individual growth. I have also listed a few math-related books because I would like to have a weekly lunch hour with my students where we can read the stories and chat with each other, outside of the typical class setting. Thank you so much for anything you can contribute to my beloved mathematicians! We greatly appreciate it.
