I have been teaching Anatomy & Physiology for 21 years, and each year my students have participated in a 10-week dissection. As one former student who is now a doctor told me after her first day in the cadaver lab, "My brain was racing, because this could have been my grandmother, but my hands knew what to do because of my experience in your anatomy class." The benefits of dissection in Anatomy are three-fold: Anatomy is the only class in our school that participates in dissections, so these students have not had this hands-on experience; students learn that all animals are different from one another, so in their future careers in health sciences, humans will be different too; and most importantly, their hands learn the feel of tissues, and skill with scalpels and scissors. Before students come to lab, they have to draw what muscles and organs will look like, so they know what to expect and aren't wasting this opportunity. I sit with each group of students and teach them exactly what to look for and how to work properly. I give students written quizzes, then oral quizzes, then practical exams, which is what they will experience in college. This lab experience is a large part of their preparation for future success.
