By adding these books to our classroom, students will have an opportunity to hear multiple authors voices, which will strengthen their own writing and reading comprehension. Beyond that, and most importantly, students will have an opportunity to regularly interact with social-emotional topics. Every day we will start with a morning meeting, in which we'll focus on a social topic for about two weeks. Some topics we will discuss are integrity, courage, conflict resolution, joy and belonging. Each topic will be introduced with quality literature where students will begin to determine the theme. Throughout the weeks, we will discuss important vocabulary and compare and contrast characters in stories in relation to the socia-emotional theme. As teachers, we have a responsibility to teach more than just the content we have been assigned. We have an opportunity to instill valuable life lessons in students, and through reading aloud and holding discussions in the classroom, we can begin to give students tangible examples to take with them as they face the real world.
