Many elementary students, as well as older students, find writing a challenge, thus, they avoid it. Students don’t see why they need to be able to write a narrative or respectfully argue their position on something or why they need to analyze literature. Reading and writing are reciprocal and students don’t seem to see this. I want my students to see the craft of writing is what they are reading in their books and they can do it too. I want to build a community of readers and writers. Students will see how a writer can make reading exciting! They will learn they, too, can write great pieces and feel the accomplishment of an author. By using the books from my list, I will show students how to create a great lead and an exceptional ending. They will see how a stronger sentence can make all the difference in writing. They will see what I am teaching in use so they will better know how to do it also.
