Growing up as the only half-Asian student in my grade, I never saw myself in my own education. I can recall only one picture book with a half-Asian character and my parents purchased me that book. I never want my students to feel excluded from the narrative of their classroom library. Our classroom library can be a powerful opportunity to learn about lives and cultures different from their own so that they can be more open and understanding, a chance to continue to see non-tokenized, positive bipoc role models, and a safe space to be represented, honored, and heard. Distance learning or not, we will use these books in our read aloud and reading will be core in our daily routine. This is my first year teaching in the US and I want to provide the absolute best for my students. However, I'm going to need some help. Please help me create a strong, inclusive classroom library.
