This project exists so that I can accomplish 3 different things: 1) Create a COVID-acceptable but HAPPY classroom space. There will be a group of students that will be assigned to "my" classroom all day long, as I move through the building on a cart. Since I'm a first year teacher, right now that classroom is super empty and boring. My heart hurts for these students and worries about the restlessness that will be caused by being unable to move around the school. I'm hoping that with a few fun (and disinfect-able) touches, this classroom can feel like a positive space. Cue the string lights! 2. Provide learning that puts an emphasis on diverse, global perspectives. My main goals as a teacher are to widen a student's world, give them tools with which to examine that world critically, and to have the ambition and confidence to set about making it a better place. With social distancing in effect for months now, what better way to develop literacy than to engage ourselves in dialogue about how people communicate with each other? I operate under the firm stance that all languages, cultures, and experiences have a place in the classroom. Resources like Google Mini (which can be multilingual!) and bilingual dictionaries can help me create a space in which students can use their whole language repertoire to create meaning. 3. Be able to stay organized and focus on facilitating learning as I move around the building on a cart! What a daunting task. With the cart, organizational tools, and special COVID items like the sanitizer pump and paper towel holder, I hope to lessen the hurtles that need jumping over before we can start learning.
