According to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, there are five levels of needs that need to be met before an individual can reach their full potential. The five levels of need are in a pyramid, with the lowest levels needing to be met before any of the other levels. From the bottom of the pyramid up, the levels are: physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. My students cannot fully unlock their potential unless their physiological needs are being met. We know that some students rely on school to get at least two meals for the day, this was made extremely clear during the COVID-19 pandemic. Something that wasn't made extremely clear and is often forgotten about is that some students go without personal hygiene products. Personal hygiene falls into the most crucial level of needs, the physiological level. Whether we want to admit it or not, we have all forgotten to put on deodorant, realize it in the middle of the day, and hope no one else can smell our armpit stink. Now, imagine for whatever reason, the adult you are living with cannot get you personal hygiene products. We all know how aware of and worried we are about our armpit stink after just a few hours of no deodorant, think about how much that awareness and worry might increase if a day turns into days or weeks. This project will allow me to purchase 60 packs of men's and women's deodorant, several packs of toothbrushes, several packs of toothpaste, and 25 mini hairbrushes. My goal is to take a worry away for my students and help them focus on learning.
