Building a sense of community where we celebrate each other's differences is the foundation of our classroom. My students live in a town of 35,000 with very little racial diversity. I want to do better at having many more books in my library with "windows and mirrors". Our school-wide improvement goal is based around this phrase and the goal of teaching with and sharing diverse books. We want books that are "mirrors" for students: books that they can see themselves in and "windows": books where students can see into other cultures. Many of our students don't see a world outside of their own. My desire for them is to have their world opened up to them! Books and discussions around these books are a perfect way to do that! I want all my students to be seen and heard in the literature I use to teach and in the books they read. I also want my students to see a world different from their own and to advocate for those who have not been seen or heard. In light of all the events in the world right now, we as teachers must do better to promote compassion, understanding, and give students the knowledge and tools to stand up and advocate for others. I feel that starting with meaningful discussions around diverse literature is a perfect place to start.
