While kids may be inundated with racial issues in the news, they often don’t have the place or guidance to have deep and critical guided conversations about the issues. This novel will be used to complete our semester-long study of African American history (African culture, enslavement and resistance, Civil War, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights, red-lining, rap, and hip hop and BLM) and bring the conversation into the present day with a powerful Black voice my students can relate to. Through this novel, students will discuss systemic racism, bias, white privilege, and police brutality.
