I am a first-year teacher slowly furnishing my classroom with items that will promote and support community and intersubjectivity between my 20 5th grade students. This carpet will be used every day by students in a multitude of facets. The most important use will be our daily morning meetings which will emphasize building a community of learners who support and respect one another. This will be a space to gather as a class and have important discussions and share-outs regarding many topics that promote social-emotional learning. In addition to this, the carpet will add an ample and comfortable flexible seating option for students, instead of sitting on the tile floor, where students can collaborate in a relaxed setting that still supports their learning. In total, this item will create a more comfortable space for my students to learn and an atmosphere of a "home away from home" where all students can thrive. Creating a safe space for students to come regardless of background or home-living situation is of the utmost importance to me, and a central gathering area will allow me to support my students in their academic pursuits in a space where they know they will always be welcome.
