Independent reading is one of my students' favorite activities in the classroom. Any time a student finishes an assignment before it is due, they love to grab a book off the shelves of our classroom library and find a spot to read. To encourage their growth as readers, no spot is off limits. At any moment you can find a student tucked away in a corner, relaxing on the carpet, or even spread out under the teacher's desk. These books will not only help my students grow as readers, they will allow my students to feel represented in their classroom library. My students are fortunate to come together in a classroom community that is made up of different backgrounds and experiences. These books will help them to feel accepted and celebrate their differences. The books will also allow them to learn about others who have had a different upbringing from their own. The books that were chosen will create the opportunity for my students to grow into an open-minded and inclusive community while enhancing the welcoming environment that I strive to create.
