Recently, I attended a conference put on by Teachers College Reading & Writing Project, a think tank out of Columbia University. During this event, Dr. Sonja Cherry-Paul said, " We must intentionally disrupt the spirit killing narrative that there’s something wrong with blackness... We MUST have books that celebrate black joy, creativity, and ingenuity. We must teach students to love themselves." This is radical, challenging work and must be intentionally fostered. My goal is to enable each of my students to see themselves in the books that they are reading, to empower them to build their own identity. Books can be windows and mirrors into our lives and the lives of others. As mirrors, we see ourselves and are affirmed in our identities. As windows, we are given the beautiful opportunity to see the world through the eyes of others and to expand our horizons.
