Every day, I get the opportunity to touch the lives of young children. My first year of teaching taught me many valuable lessons, but the one that is dear to my heart is understanding how the world around students can impact their ability to learn. I want to be able to provide diverse works of literature where students can connect on a deeper level. My students deserve the same opportunity to know and love who they are. In using the power of reading, I can allow for self-affirmation in my student's cultural identities and develop more positive outlooks on themselves and others. Studies show that "literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection, we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human experience."
