Students will use the materials to demonstrate their knowledge by creating projects that reflect their understanding of concepts in social studies, science, math and English language. The projects increase students ability to express, create and demonstrate knowledge while their English skills are developing. In English (ESL), students complete a timeline of 4 major events in their life to demonstrate "New Beginnings" by using art paper, pastels and/or colors to draw their chosen events. The students do a presentation and write about how the event influenced their life to practice both verbal and written communication. In science, we have used the clay, drawing paper and coloring pencils to learn the content language and terminology students need to understand cell structures, land formation, earth layers, etc. A great example is our unit of cell structures where given paper plates, a set of clay and markers students create their own cell structures and explain function of each structure. Finally in math, students have to demonstrate understanding of various math concepts and we have found the Unifix Equation cubes to be versatile for grades 5-12 due to the numbers and symbols included in this set. Students use of these materials provides an equitable learning environment that is inclusive as it allows all English Learners to actively participate in projects and present information to the class.
