My teaching partner and I decided that we wanted to begin our freshman English classes with a novel that would allow us to introduce a variety of content and cover as many standards as possible while building a strong class community that honors each of our students as individuals. Under current circumstances, the class set of novels we obtained for this purpose cannot be shared by all of our students--and it is very likely that we will begin the year with at least a hybrid schedule requiring some distance learning--therefore, we are requesting a copy of the novel for each student to keep as a kind of welcome-to-high-school gift.
