Last year, I played the animated short film Hair Love for my students. Their eyes lit up as they watched and I remember one of my students saying in excitement "he looks like my dad!". They laughed and smiled as they compared themselves and their family to the characters in the film. It would be amazing if my students were able to feel this same connection to the books they read. Unfortunately, many of the books in our classroom do not match the diversity in our world. I would like for my students to be able to see themselves and their families in books. Not only is it important for them to see themselves, but to also learn about other cultures that are different than their own. I plan on using these books for read alouds and independent reading so that students can be aware that our differences are what makes us special.
