My students struggle with learning in the traditional classroom environment. Most of my student population is from a low socioeconomic level. Many of my students struggle with motivation. They need choices and control to facilitate their success. I believe flexible seating options will transform my classroom and my students' mindsets. Having the option to sit where they would like and how they would like each day will increase their excitement and motivation to learn. I witnessed this firsthand last year with three options for one student who was severely struggling with traditional seating. I thought how wonderful it would be for all of my first graders to have the ability to choose their own seating options! Students and children need to have options to make decisions and have control over their learning environment. This helps them make sound choices later in life. Flexible seating will help my students build these decision making skills. My students will also develop more ownership of their classroom and camaraderie with one another as they work together to share seating options. My goal every year is to bring my class together as a family and I believe that having multiple options for seating will help my students build this community. They will have options to sit where and how they would like, and also mix up the class seating every day.
