Our school building is undergoing a HUGE makeover--our old carpeted floors are getting replaced with brand new shiny tile! While exciting, our new tile floors leave my Kindergarten classroom lacking in comfy places to cozy up with a book or come together as a whole class. If our wish for a classroom carpet comes true, it will be lovingly used by my students every day as they comfortably engage in the most magical moments that occur in our classroom--from independent reading to whole group instruction and class meetings! Whole group learning will undoubtedly look a bit different this year as we navigate how Kindergarten will look amidst our "new normal." One plan to keep the students safe is to attach Velcro "sit spots" to the carpet as a visual cue to encourage social distancing. Having a large carpet like this one will allow students to safely and comfortably spread out, but still feel as though they can come together in a communal space to share, interact, and collaborate as part of a whole, even at a distance. These opportunities are essential to the students' social/emotional development and well-being throughout Kindergarten and beyond.
