In an ever changing and more diversified world, my students need access to diverse picture books. The books in this list cover a wide array of diversity, such as: gender, powerful women/girls, families, race/ethnicity, religion, holidays, economic status, being an advocate, kids who are neurodiverse, kids with disabilities, and mental health. Representation matters! My students need to see themselves and people important to them in the books I read in our classroom. They also need to be exposed to people who are different from them. I got these book titles from a list curated by Vera Ahiyya, kindergarten teacher, and educational consultant. If I am teaching kids virtually, I can still do read alouds over the internet!
