Our school population is predominately white and middle class. When choosing books to read independently from our classroom library, my students are generally able to "see themselves" in the characters they read about, but I want and need to do more. These books will help me start to expand the diversity in my classroom library so that ALL students not only see themselves represented but also have a "window to the world" and are able to see the diversity of our world reflected in our library. Students will be able to read these books on their own, with peers, and take them home to share and talk about with their families.

About my class
