Literature gives us the opportunity to explore and analyze the world. My tenth and eleventh grade students are from a small, rural community. Thus, they need access to novels that are diverse, multicultural, eye-opening, and exciting to read. Kindred by Octavia Butler and Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson are two books which fulfill many of those requirements! In addition to being exposed to diverse literature, my students need to build confidence in their reading. They need to be comfortable with the stories we read. Many feign disinterest in an attempt to hide discomfort with difficult texts. Most of the traditional texts for tenth and eleventh grade are above their reading level. Although I scaffold and provide support, I can see that it still crushes their confidence to struggle through a book. Each of these books is easy to navigate or break into sections while still providing depth and opportunity for analysis. I need at least 23 copies of each book so that my students can have the opportunity to keep the book with them during literature circles ( with one class using them at a time). Over the last three years, I have slowly been replacing or enhancing outdated literature units by purchasing books to supplement with which will show my students a different perspective than what they are used to having included. Please help me continue.
