Our school is still very young and the library even more so, having only been in existence for two school years. We also share our library with a neighboring school making the lack of books even more pronounced. The library is operating at about a 50% capacity and is in desperate need of more books. The students are constantly asking for more books written by, illustrated by, or about people who look like them. The majority of our students are African American or Hispanic and are thirsting for reading material that they can relate to and identify with. All of the books selected for my project meet that qualification. With the current state of our country, the need for proper educational material on the past and cultural relevance is even more important.
