Schools are a place for students to learn about other cultures in a safe atmosphere. Reading books that mirror your ethnicity helps you feel confident your culture is important. Being able to read about the lives of people who are different than you helps you value, respect, and accept others. It gives children the opportunity to step out of their world and into the world they have not experienced. Literature is the perfect way to teach students about diversity and to promote discussions about difficult topics. Some books will be part of a whole group read aloud and discussion about inequality. Other books will be read to educate students about other cultures, races, and ethnicity.
