Books are a gateway for our students to imaginary and real lands near and far. They open doors to new cultures and can empower readers by seeing characters who look like them take on the world in the face of challenges. Our students love to read - they are curious little humans, invested in exploring different communities through books and growing as readers, but not all classrooms in our school have books to support student learning. Donalyn Miller wrote, "I am convinced that if we show students how to embrace reading as a lifelong pursuit and not just a collection of skills for school performance, we will be doing what we have been charged to do: create readers." If we truly want to create readers in our classrooms, our students must be able to interact with books that spark joy and curiosity and are at accessible to them as a reader. Through this project, I aim to bring books to our guided reading classrooms, so that no matter what reading level, books are mirrors to our scholars, that provoke meaningful conversations. Through this mix of texts, our readers can be inspired by the world and critically think about their role in making their community and the world a more just place. Students will be able to see characters who look like them and read stories written by Black author's!
