My goal is to create a flexible, active learning environment for my students. I am requesting stability balls and wiggle stools for my students to sit on while at their tables. The purpose of the project is to exchange the traditional seating in a science classroom with stability balls and wiggle stools as seats. A stability ball is a large rubber ball that is typically used for exercising. As a person sits on the stability ball, his/her body naturally makes slight movements in order to sit up straight and balance. The wiggle stool improves posture and relaxes the right side of the brain, leading to better focus. There would still be some chairs in the classroom for students who choose that instead of a stability ball or wiggle stool. Students have an innate need to move. Sitting on the ball or stool allows students some movement as they are learning. The stability ball and wiggle stool seating could be beneficial to all students, but would especially benefit students with ADHD and/or Sensory Processing Disorders. Most teachers would agree that there are many students who like to slouch back, lay their heads down, tilt their chairs back, or tap pencils throughout the class. Stability balls and wiggle stools would decrease or prevent these behaviors as students can focus their attention on their learning. I will train students to self-monitor their behavior and learn to use these stools and balls to rock or turn while completing classwork instead of talking to friends or zoning out. I envision the students using the stools or balls while doing group and pair work.
