“Reading is an exercise in empathy; an exercise in walking in someone else’s shoes for a while.” - Malorie Blackman I hope with giving my students an opportunity to reflect on the diverse human experience, they strengthen their reading skills and their human skills. A story from a different perspective can help create empathy and compassion. It also can improve critical thinking skills such as analysis and identifying bias. Having a classroom library of books that cover social justice issues also sets a precedent of a culture of respect and tolerance.
