Flexible seating allows for collaboration among students, decreases extended sitting time, and increases student focus. Those who need to move in order to learn have the opportunity to by using different types of flexible seating. For example, some of my students need to bounce or fidget in order to help with their need to move. Allowing them bounce seats, wobbly seats, or textured seats help meet their needs. By increasing the flexible seating in my classroom, I also will be opening up the doors to new learning and teaching strategies. Through this project I hope to see more partner work, small group work, and tackling the variety of learning needs all of my students have. I do not wish to see students sitting at their desks and working on paper and pencil activities. I wish to see students moving around, working together, and learning through play and hands on activities. Flexible seating will be a great step in that direction. To add, some students wish to be positioned differently while they learn. Flexible seating allows students to stand, sit, and lay down in a variety of ways to increase learning. For example, some students may wish to lay on pillows, sit on the floor, or sit at a lower table on a stool rather than at their desk. Giving them these opportunities opens up their learning potential.
