Learning a new language is always a challenge. Now, being exposed to a whole new language in the classroom when you are five years old, can be shocking and in some cases very frustrating. It is true that kids at this age learn at a wonderful speed; however, when it comes to learn a language that is not their own, they need extra stimulation and exposure in order to create structures and get vocabulary they are not familiar with. Kids are also very visual. All the manipulatives will make it easier for them to identify sounds in words at the same time as they increase their vocabulary that will later on be incorporated into speaking practice. Now, just because the kids are being taught in a different language, we can not set aside the skills that need to be worked on and developed during kindergarten. Letter formation is necessary at this age and if it can be done along with the learning of new vocabulary they are being exposed to, then that will make it even better. Becoming global citizens implies much more than learning a language. But it is through langauge that the world can be communicated and understood.
