Guided reading is a beloved time of day in the physical classroom. A small group of learners brings their own personal white boards and dry erase markers to complete word study activities and read with their teacher. Together, we learn and apply new strategies. Students leave each lesson feeling more confident in their literacy skills. For many students, especially struggling readers, guided reading makes the difference between reading on grade level or falling further behind. Believe me, I have tried my best to duplicate effectiveness of these lessons remotely. I have attempted to incorporate educational apps, digital texts, videos, breakout rooms, etc. but it never fails that something is not working for somebody; increments of precious instructional time slip away as we troubleshoot. The virtual guided reading experience has, until now, depended on a screen, a keyboard, and/or a digital writing tool (e.g. finger writing on the screen). My students are at an age where they are still developing their fine motor skills. There has been a definite decrease in the quality of their writing and handwriting during these months of at-home learning due to the lack of taking part in actual writing, cutting, pasting and other fine motor activities regularly assigned in the classroom. The good news is that I have 30 days of level-specific guided reading lessons (incorporating cutting, pasting and writing) for each student ready to go. The texts have been selected! The copies have been made! The holes have been punched! I am ready to deliver to their door. We just need some help getting it all organized in binders and ensuring that each learner will have the supplies they need. No learner left behind due to technical difficulties! Please be a part of helping a child become a successful reader!
