A Land Remembered Student Edition is a powerful teaching tool. Many different subjects can be taught using this singular book! The MacIvey family goes through trials and tribulations as they try to make a meager living for themselves. Never did they imagine that through their hard work they would own thousands of acres of land. I would like each student to have a copy so that they can engage in activities THROUGHOUT the year. Each 9 weeks I assign a project that can be completed at school and at home. Without these books, I would not be able to assign these engaging projects. One of the projects is that the students will keep track of a reading response log. The logs will record the daily life of the MacIvey's with references to the Civil War. The students will also record interactions with Indians and how they are described in the book. At the end of the book I would like the students to complete a 3x4 patchwork paper quilt using their notes to depict and summarize the book. Throughout the year the students will, not only keep their logs, but also be required to keep track of the MacIvey's as they travel throughout FL. The students will have a map of Florida that they will color code with routes taken by the family and places mentioned throughout FL. Another project will required the students to study Ecology, which is demonstrated multiple times throughout the book. Many more activities are outlined in the teacher guide "A Land Remembered Goes to School." Which was purchased with my copy of "A Land Remembered V1". Without the student books all of these activities become less achievable. Although I can do a simple read aloud, it takes away the authenticity of the learning!
